When Camille McGirt was sidelined from basketball because of an injury during her undergraduate years, she wanted to stay active. And she wanted help other girls develop and maintain healthy lifestyles, so she started Healthy Girls Save the World (HGSW).
She came to the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health to learn how to make the non-profit HGSW effective and increase its capacity to improve health outcomes for middle school girls through the promotion of healthy minds, bodies and relationships.
“As a social entrepreneur, I am constantly thinking about how to develop HGSW into a sustainable and thriving organization,” McGirt said.
Camille McGirt received the Robert E. Bryan Social Innovation Fellowship in 2011. HGSW was awarded a $50,000 grant from the William R. Kenan Jr. Charitable Trust in 2017.
