Ray was just 21—a senior and the UNC Tar Heels mascot, Rameses—when he was struck and killed by a car before the 2007 NCAA Men’s Basketball Regionals in New Jersey. But in the wake of tragedy came new hope and life for others.
Jason’s family and friends have carried on his spirit through the Jason Ray Foundation, which educates and raises awareness for organ donation. In 2016, UNC honored Jason and that work by renaming its transplant clinic as the UNC Hospitals Jason Ray Transplant Clinic.
“After getting the kidney and pancreas transplant from Jason Ray, this clinic dedication means a lot to me,” said David Erving. “I would not be here if not for the transplant.”
