A decade after earning his doctorate from Carolina, Gangotena founded the Universidad San Francisco de Quito (USFQ), the first private, liberal arts university in Ecuador. Today, USFQ and Carolina partner on a joint research and educational initiative focused on understanding and preserving the Galapagos Islands.
