A Greater Drive: Fighting for Global Human Rights

Carolina Law develops students who can navigate the complexities of justice on a global scale, with alumni making a difference all around the world. Angela Liu ’09 is an associate at the Chicago office of Dechert, a global law firm, where she specializes in securities, litigation, white collar and complex commercial litigation. But her passion goes beyond her day-to-day occupation; she also volunteers as an attorney with The Advocates for Human Rights. In that role, she traveled to the United Nations in Geneva to give statements about abuses in Eritrea and Moldova, and participated on a panel on domestic violence in Serbia, Tunisia, Morocco and Montenegro.

“My professors and classmates at Carolina Law armed me with the audacity to believe I could not only strive to be a good lawyer; I could also strive to be a good person. My experiences there pushed me to seek a sophisticated private practice at a global firm, while allowing me to realize my goal of advocating for change before the Human Rights Council at the United Nations in Geneva. Carolina Law made me a more compassionate, generous, and empathetic attorney on a micro level, while giving me the tools to actually realize change on a global scale,” Angela said.
