Incoming first-year student Izzie Estes will be the first in her family to attend college.

In the shadow of the spot on North Carolina’s Outer Banks where the Wright Brothers launched the world’s first flight, Izzie Estes is preparing for a first of her own.

“Being the first in my family to try going to college, or to go to Carolina, feels like trailblazing, almost,” Izzie said. “It’s like a leap in a completely different direction from most of the rest of my family.”

Izzie, who is planning to major in environmental science, is going to Carolina as a Colonel Robinson Scholar.

“That means the world to me because without that scholarship, I wouldn’t be able to go to Carolina or to college, really, anywhere,” Izzie said.
