The Shufords are a fifth-generation Carolina family. Abel Alexander Shuford Jr. was a member of the UNC Class of 1900. They’re also an entrepreneurial family, starting Shurtape in 1955 as a division of Shuford Mills, a textile firm dating back to 1880. Today, they produce some of the most recognizable names in adhesive tapes — Shurtape, Duck, FrogTap, T-Rex and Kip.
They also believe in education that provides skills that prepare students to adapt. Jim and Stephen Shuford and Dorothy Shuford Lanier are making sure Carolina provides students with the best entrepreneurial education possible—through entrepreneurs-in-residence, professor fellows, a lecture series and internships.

The Shuford family made an $18 million gift that will more than double the size of Carolina’s nationally ranked undergraduate entrepreneurship program based in the College of Arts and Sciences. It is the largest single one-time gift by a living individual or family to the College. The minor in entrepreneurship will be named the Shuford Program in Entrepreneurship in the family’s honor.
