Tom Bythell knows more about the campus’s 11,000-plus trees than many people know about members of their own families.
So when one of these venerable University sentinels becomes diseased and has to be removed, Bythell, the University’s arborist, feels the loss. He also realizes that replacing an aged tree allows him to have a hand in leaving something for posterity. Bythell’s crew plants anywhere from 80 to 100 trees a year on campus.
“This is a forever campus,” he said. “I’m planting for our grandchildren. If you don’t have patience, you really shouldn’t be in the tree business.”
