Honoring Carolina Firsts

“Thanks to their courageous examples, Carolina moved closer to the ideal of the University of the People.”

“Thanks to their courageous examples, Carolina moved closer to the ideal of the University of the People.”

“These brave firsts paved the way for all who followed, and thanks to their courageous examples, Carolina moved closer to the ideal of the University of the people.” –Chancellor Carol L. Folt

Beginning in fall 2017, Carolina will award need-based, undergraduate awards and graduate fellowships that bear the names of 21 extraordinary members of the Carolina community who made unique and lasting contributions to the University. These awards—which honor Sallie Walker Stockard, the first woman graduate; Henry Owl, the first American Indian to be admitted; and John L. Brandon, Ralph K. Frasier and LeRoy B. Frasier, Jr., the first black undergraduates; among others—will help deserving students make their own personal journey at Chapel Hill and uphold Carolina’s commitment to access and affordability for all.
