Hudson Owens got his love of sports from his dad.

When his father passed away from cancer in 2015, the UNC senior paid tribute to the man who instilled that passion in him by launching the UNC-Chapel Hill Global Soccer Society, which aims to create a more avid soccer fan base at Carolina.
Hudson’s work with the society led him to Shay Payne, a 10-year-old soccer enthusiast fighting cancer at UNC Children’s HospitalOpens in new window. That connection put Shay back on the field to serve as honorary captain for the Tar Heel men’s soccer team during an ACC tournament game.
