The brass plate that was laid within the Old East cornerstone on October 12, 1793, is one of the most precious artifacts from Carolina’s history — a direct link to the University’s founding. For decades, that plate wasn’t even in Chapel Hill, but 500 miles away as scrap metal waiting to be melted down in a foundry in Tennessee. Because of the dedication of a few alumni, the plate returned to Chapel Hill and was presented to Edward Kidder Graham at Carolina’s 123rd University Day in 1916.
