Campaign Leadership
In order to achieve our goals and ambitions in this campaign, we sought Tar Heels who both have national and international success and who have a deep and abiding love for Carolina. Gratefully, the following visionaries agreed to lead and guide this campaign ensuring a balance of perspectives and experience.
LEADERSHIP PHASE CO-CHAIRS
Barbara Rosser Hyde
×Barbara Rosser HydeLEADERSHIP PHASE CO-CHAIRHyde, a Morehead Scholar (now Morehead-Cain) and UNC graduate with bachelor’s degrees in English and religious studies, is chair and CEO of the Hyde Family Foundation in Memphis, Tennessee. After graduation and a brief time as a teacher in Kenya, she began her career in the University’s development office and went on to serve as the executive director of the Arts and Sciences Foundation. She served two terms on the UNC Board of Trustees from 2005 to 2013, including a term as vice chair. She co-founded and co-chaired the Carolina Women’s Leadership Council and was a member of the Carolina First Campaign Steering Committee. She also chaired the advisory board of the UNC Institute for the Arts and Humanities, of which she has been a major supporter. She is also a key supporter of the Morehead-Cain Scholarship Foundation and the Honors Program in the College of Arts & Sciences. Hyde is a member of the Order of the Old Well, which recognizes UNC students, faculty and staff of high character who have demonstrated outstanding humanitarian service. She is also a member of the Order of the Golden Fleece and is a 2010 recipient of the UNC General Alumni Association Distinguished Service Medal.
Roger L. Perry, Sr.
×Roger L. Perry, Sr.LEADERSHIP PHASE CO-CHAIRPerry, a UNC political science alumnus and a graduate of The Executive Program at UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School, is president of East West Partners Management Company, a real estate development and management company, in Chapel Hill. Since 1983, East West Partners has developed more residential real estate in North Carolina than any other company. In 2003, Perry was appointed to the UNC Board of Trustees, which he chaired from 2007 to 2009. As chair of the Buildings and Grounds Committee, he oversaw approximately $2 billion in new University construction. He was a member of the Carolina First Campaign Steering Committee. As a member of the UNC Board of Visitors, he helped lead fundraising efforts for the Finley Golf Course renovation. Perry has received the UNC General Alumni Association’s Distinguished Service Medal, and in 2014 he was the inaugural J. W. Willie York Award winner for Community Builders.
John L. Townsend III
×John L. Townsend IIILEADERSHIP PHASE CO-CHAIRTownsend, a UNC alumnus and M.B.A. graduate, most recently served as managing partner and chief operating officer at Tiger Management, LLC. Prior, he spent nearly 15 years at Goldman, Sachs & Co. as a general partner and as managing director. He also was employed at Donaldson, Lufkin, and Jenrette. Townsend was a member of the UNC Board of Trustees from 2010 to 2013 and has served on the executive committee of the UNC Investment Fund, UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School’s Board of Visitors and Ackland Art Museum’s National Advisory Board. His philanthropy spans the campus and includes support to Kenan-Flagler, the Ackland and the UNC Institute for the Arts and Humanities, among others. Townsend has also been a volunteer leader for the Grand Teton National Park Foundation and the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Team Foundation, among several other organizations.

W. Lowry Caudill
×W. Lowry CaudillPUBLIC LAUNCH PHASE CO-CHAIRCaudill, co-founder of Magellan Laboratories Incorporated, received a B.S. degree in chemistry at UNC and a Ph.D. in analytical chemistry at Indiana University in Bloomington. He chaired the UNC Board of Trustees from 2013 through 2015 and remains a member. His other service to Carolina includes serving as past chair of the Executive Board of the Educational Foundation, as well as serving on the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center Board of Visitors, Carolina Research Venture Fund Board and the Advisory Working Group for the Shuford Program in Entrepreneurship in the College of Arts and Sciences. He was a Carolina First Campaign Steering Committee member and chaired the Chancellor’s Innovation Circle. His honors include a Distinguished Alumnus Award from Carolina, a Distinguished Service Medal from the UNC General Alumni Association and the Order of the Golden Fleece. He and his Magellan Laboratories business partner, Alfred G. Childers, were named Life Sciences Entrepreneurs of the Year for the Carolinas in 1998 and received the North Carolina Council for Entrepreneurial Development Entrepreneurial Excellence Award in 2002.
John G. Ellison Jr.
×John G. Ellison Jr.PUBLIC LAUNCH PHASE CO-CHAIREllison, chairman of the Ellison Co., earned his B.A. in history and M.B.A. at Carolina. He has served on multiple boards, including the UNC Board of Visitors and the UNC Institute for the Arts and Humanities Advisory Board. In 2003, he began an eight-year tenure on the UNC Board of Trustees, during which he partnered with then-Student Body President J.J. Raynor to produce Carolina–the Best Place to Teach, Learn and Discover, a strategic plan encompassing more than 1,000 interviews on how to improve the quality of education at Carolina. He has supported many areas on campus, including UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School, Carolina Performing Arts and student aid. His honors include UNC’s William Richardson Davie Award and the UNC General Alumni Association’s Distinguished Service Medal.
Julia Sprunt Grumbles
×Julia Sprunt GrumblesPUBLIC LAUNCH PHASE CO-CHAIRGrumbles received a B.A. in history at Carolina. She retired as corporate vice president of human resources, public relations and corporate marketing resources from Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. She is a member of the UNC Board of Trustees, and has served on the boards of the UNC Institute for the Arts and Humanities, Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center and UNC Health Care System. She served on the Carolina First Campaign Steering Committee and co-founded the Carolina Women’s Leadership Council. She has taught in UNC’s Minor in Entrepreneurship in the College of Arts and Sciences and from 2012 to 2013 served as interim vice chancellor for University development. Her honors include UNC’s William Richardson Davie Award and the UNC General Alumni Association’s Distinguished Service Medal. She also has received the National Cable Television Association’s Vanguard Award for Marketing, one of the cable industry’s most prestigious honors.

Vicki Craver
×Vicki CraverCLOSING PHASE CO-CHAIRCraver, who graduated from Carolina with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, is a former bond trader whose career included serving as vice president in Goldman Sachs’ fixed-income division. She began her career with Eastman Chemical in Tennessee before going back to earn an M.B.A. from Dartmouth College in 1997. After leaving the financial world in 2001, she became extensively involved in nonprofits in Greenwich, Connecticut, igniting her interest in local philanthropy. In addition to her work as a community leader in Connecticut, Craver’s service includes chairing the UNC College of Arts & Sciences Foundation Board of Directors.
Jennifer Halsey Evans
×Jennifer Halsey EvansCLOSING PHASE CO-CHAIREvans, a Morehead Scholar who graduated with highest honors and distinction with degrees in political science and communications, is a strategic advisor and investor in breakthrough medical technology companies. She is a professor of the practice in the Department of Economics in the College of Arts & Sciences, leading an honors seminar in entrepreneurship in Silicon Valley where she has lived since 1998. Evans serves on the board of the Morehead-Cain Scholarship Fund and is co-chair of Carolina West. She previously chaired UNC’s Board of Visitors and served eight years on the board of the Institute for the Arts and Humanities.
Michael D. Kennedy
×Michael D. KennedyCLOSING PHASE CO-CHAIRKennedy is a senior partner at Korn/Ferry International. He earned a B.A. in history with highest honors from Carolina, and went on to get an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School. In 2011, he was appointed by President Barack Obama to chair the Federal Retirement Thrift Investment Board, the largest pension fund in the country. At Carolina, Kennedy has been instrumental in recruiting alumni of color to volunteer and leadership roles to support the University. He has served on several boards, including the UNC Institute for the Arts and Humanities, the UNC Center for the Study of the American South and the Chapel Hill Investment Fund. He chaired the UNC Board of Visitors for two consecutive terms and is a strong supporter of the UNC School of Education. He has received UNC’s William Richardson Davie Award, and the UNC General Alumni Association has recognized him with the Harvey E. Beech Outstanding Alumni Award and with the 2017 Distinguished Service Medal.
C. Austin Stephens
×C. Austin StephensCLOSING PHASE CO-CHAIRStephens, who received his bachelor’s degree in history from Carolina, is a managing director of the Private Banking and Investment Group at Merrill Lynch. In addition to serving as co-chair, his work on the campaign includes chairing the Next Generation Committee, a strategy group comprised primarily of alumni in their 30s and 40s who represent the University’s philanthropic future.
