Take the Opportunity to Give Opportunity

“I recognized that through this generosity, I was given a wonderful opportunity. Not only to pursue a lifelong dream, but to do so unburdened and with the freedom to explore my interests and curiosities.”

“I recognized that through this generosity, I was given a wonderful opportunity. Not only to pursue a lifelong dream, but to do so unburdened and with the freedom to explore my interests and curiosities.”

When UNC School of Medicine student Cam Holland was growing up in a tough neighborhood  in Pittsburgh, P.A., his health care was provided  by a nearby low-cost clinic. The older he became, the more he realized the impact that this clinic had on his and other families’ ability to access care. His dream became to study medicine and improve that access for others. Though he had attended Carolina as an undergraduate — and even became the starting center for the Tar Heel football team — he suffered a post-college injury that made him doubt his future as a medical student. When he learned that he was not only accepted to the UNC School of Medicine, but also received the Blanchard Carolina Family Loyalty Fund Scholarship, the news was life-changing.

“I recognized that through this generosity, I was given a wonderful opportunity. Not only to pursue a lifelong dream, but to do so unburdened and with the freedom to explore my interests and curiosities,” Holland said. “I have a responsibility to all those who helped me along my journey; to always give my best effort. Most importantly, I realized that I owe a debt of gratitude, one that could only be repaid if I continue my mission to serve.”

Holland is just one of many medical students whose lives have been transformed through a private scholarship. Together, we will open doors for tomorrow’s physician leaders as they serve the needs of North Carolina and beyond, and advance the field of medicine.
