"We had to figure out a way for every student to get involved."

When UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School launched Business CaresOpens in new window in 2014 to help organizations achieve their missions, Super Cooper’s Little Red Wagon FoundationOpens in new window—which supports families dealing with pediatric brain cancer—was one of its first nonprofit partners. Alex Pritts ’17 (B.S.B.A.) and his classmates assembled care packages for Super Cooper patients undergoing treatment at UNC.

But Pritts knew they could do more. Carolina students could befriend the patients and their families, serving as mentors, friends. The idea was a hit.

Super Cooper’s College BuddiesOpens in new window was recognized as an official student organization. Now, College Buddies visit patients and their families, and spend one-on-one time doing whatever their younger pal wants. The visits provide patients with a sense of normalcy and the chance to simply be a kid while giving parents a respite from their duties as caretakers.
