“To me, the quilt symbolizes remembering and love and forming connections. Because the quilt tells the story of my uncle, through that I’ve felt closer and more connected to him. But I also look at it and see panels of people I’ve never met, panels of strangers, and I learned a little bit about them. This connection to someone else is really moving.”
First-year student Elizabeth Trefney’s uncle Jeremy Trefney died of AIDS in 1988, but he’s remembered by family and friends — and the AIDS Memorial Quilt. After taking Dr. Ron Strauss’s course on AIDS, she approached him about bringing her uncle’s section of the quilt to campus. It brought her closer to her uncle — and to names surrounding his.
