To help students learn and to close the achievement gap for minority and first-generation students, Kelly Hogan has completely revamped her introductory biology class and has helped her colleagues reimagine their courses. In 2015, Hogan and her husband, Brian, a research assistant professor in the chemistry department, took their work further and inaugurated the Hogan Book Award for First Generation College Students in STEM. The award, created in partnership with Pearson Education, provides introductory science textbooks—among the most expensive—to a selected group of first-generation college students.
