Growing up near coastal Texas, UNC School of Education doctoral student Lana Minshew has seen her fair share of hurricanes. And after Hurricane Harvey upturned teachers’ lives — and classrooms — in her home state, she and friends acted.
They created the Southeast Texas Adopt-A-Classroom, an online program where people, in many cases teachers, partner with individual teachers in hurricane-ravaged southeast Texas. Nearly 60 teachers in the area benefited — not just by receiving school supplies, but by creating a support system that provided morale, items to help rebuild and more — from Minshew and her friends’ efforts, and the generosity of fellow teachers.
“I wanted to do something that was more than just a school supply drive, because at the time of inception many teachers had no idea what their classrooms looked like and therefore did not know what supplies they needed.”
Minshew hopes these relationships to go through the academic year – and beyond.
